The first time it happened, Andrés didn't understand what it was.
Andrés opened his mouth to retort, not ready to let the matter go. There was something about the way Martín had looked at him, the feeling he had seen, something in his stare that bothered him.
But a solid weight suddenly manifesting in his hand brought him to a halt.
He looked down at his lap, at his right hand splayed on it.
There, in his palm, rested a mirage, an apparition of the unthinkable. A red lump of flesh and blood weighing heavy in his hand. It was bright, shiny with a faint shimmer, sticky and slippery. Warm and tepid, it was wet with dark crimson and viscous blood that flowed and dripped between Andrés' fingers and down his arm.
