Summary
The main lights in the outside room are shut off a short time later as the scientists leave, the space now bathed in the red of the maintenance lighting that is kept on at all times. It stays still, for a time, watching, listening, waiting to see if anyone is coming back. Mentally runs through the list of the name tags it’d seen today, tries to remember if any of them had led more painful prior experiments. When it comes up negative on all of those questions it breathes out a sigh of relief, and during that movement it catches sight of its own ear tag reflected in the glass.

“CBC. A complete blood count.” I answer, hoping he doesn’t ask me why.
“Purpose, question?”
Rocky, please. I’m trying to spare you right now.
Basically, Grace gets exposed to a dangerous amount of radiation during an EVA and doesn't want to tell Rocky bc of what happened to Rocky's crew <3
THIS IS A REWORKED VERSION OF "TEMPEST" - after some comments, I wanted to keep the soul of the story, but make it more scientifically plausible. While there are still probably some inaccuracies, I still hope this isn't as messy as before.

The engineer takes my hand. His skin runs hot. Very hot. He doesn't let go at what I would gauge as a socially-acceptable handshake time interval. Are we just holding hands in the middle of the lab-workshop space? Guess we are.
"I'm Rocky," he finally introduces himself. He has a hint of an accent, something lilting, melodic. I can't really place it.
"Rocky," I repeat, slowly. "Like the movies?"
"No," Rocky deadpans, giving me a look like I'm stupid. "Like the rocks."

“Oh,” I say. “That’s unusual, right?”
"Very," Rocky hums.
My throat tightens. "Does that mean there's something wrong? Are you sick?"
Rocky makes a gesture I usually interpret as "not exactly". "Not sick," he says. "But doctors still worry. When Eridian start to make fewer eggs, this usually means laying period of life is over soon. Rocky very young for this. Rocky supposed to be in ideal time of life for laying. Rocky younger than Adrian, even." He shifts on three of his feet. Already, my mind is racing ahead, wondering -- "Doctors told Rocky to ask Grace, is this radiation side effect, question?"
