Summary
This is the events of The Outsiders, pre-book, from the perspective of Darry. I LOVE Ponyboy with all my heart, but he is a bit of an unreliable narrator. This is all of the things he didn't see, the conversations he wasn't a part of, the reason for his misunderstanding of his big brother.

It’s a real shame I’m too much of a nervous wreck to leave a real comment, but I leave my bookmarks public to spill my guts out about fantastic writing on the off off chance the writer stumbles upon it. I’m working on it. This is going to be sappy and horrible and ridiculous but I have to put my thoughts somewhere. I’m generally an artistic person and all.
Anyway, this is the greatest Outsiders fic I’ve ever read in my life. It feels so true to the characters, who are really at the heart of the story (which is my preference in fiction), and expands upon them and their world so masterfully.
Every time I read the Outsiders or engage with the adaptations (I love them ALL—haven’t seen the TV series though) I take note of how SE Hinton managed to communicate so much emotion and make the characters and world feel so real through not even 50k words. This story just dials that up to a thousand, going in deep, and I simply adore it. I love the way it uses moments mentioned by Ponyboy in-canon and builds upon them in so many ways. I love how the dynamics are established through flashback and dialogue. All of the characters in this world feel so rich to me, and I’m obsessed with the introspection of Darry’s character. I love how it explored Sodapop in so many ways without his voice being at the forefront. This feels so true to the Outsiders and is so thought-provoking, going deep into who they are as people and why they act the way that they do in-canon. I happened to find this story through the comments of another series and I’m so very glad I did. Funnily enough, after watching the movie, and pondering about Throwing in the Towel from the musical (my heart), I was wondering if anybody had really deeply explored this through Darry’s perspective, like genuinely. This is far better than anything I could’ve imagined and I’m so glad there’s so much of it.
Stuff like this reminds me why it’s so important to honor art and human creativity, how there are still so many people out there who take a lot away from stories and are able to reshape it and build upon it and just enrich it in so many ways, that I’m not alone. To the writer, who will never read this, thank you. You’ve truly outdone yourself.
