We recently received reports about one or more Tumblr accounts posing as "AO3 consultants" and contacting other users about their works on the Archive. In those messages, users are asked to take down their works "due to reports of abuse" or else have their works deleted by AO3 admins.

These messages are in no way sanctioned by the AO3 Policy & Abuse committee, who will never contact users via social media. All messages you receive from our Support and Abuse teams will be signed by the volunteer contacting you, and will reference specific abuse reports, requests for technical support, or other matters pertaining to your account.

I am reporting a case of abuse that seems to have been repeated and if nothing is done, is likely to be repeated again and again. I refer to the banning of elvirakitties from this site due to reports from someone who is apparently offended by her treatment of Hermione Granger in her Harry Potter stories. Apparently this person is going to each site on which elvirakitties posts, determined to make it difficult for her to continue to share her stories with her readers. This person is being enabled in her vendetta by the banning of elvirakitties from this and other sites just because they do not like the portrayal of a character. Instead of banning elvirakitties, tell her accuser that no one is forcing her to read these stories and she can find another author to follow or even write her own thus ensuring the treatment of her heroine is as this person prefers. I find nothing offensive about elvirakitties' stories;in fact, they remind me of my favorite Bugs Bunny cartoons. There are stories on this site in which characters are graphically tortured, raped, abused physically and mentally, and pedophilia is happily engaged in. I do not ask for censorship of these stories. I ask for an explaination of why these stories are allowed to remain and stories which contain an unfavorable view of a character disliked by one person are banned. I have enjoyed this site but I may have to consider remaining within your readership and my recommendations of this site if you continue to allow this kind of pettiness to dictate your site regs. If so, I am obviously correct in expressing my disappointment regarding this site as I find your reply exceedingly unprofessional, offensive in language and content, and displaying either a misunderstanding or a deliberate misinterpretation of what I actually stated. If not, why are you reading mail not directed to your attention? To satisfy your curiousity, I was informed that elvirakitties was banned until May 30 for the reason given in my letter as a reply to a comment I made to two of her last postings. Check the comments for the last chapter of The Little Bat as reference. If this information is incorrect,I will be most relieved. I also suggest that you reread my comment to which you think you are responding so that you may have a more accurate understanding of my possible action! I also suggest you moderate your language in your next reply or someone may request banning YOU for abuse.       The comment you replied to is obviously not a rep of this site, especially since it is an anonymous comment. I also am only a user not a staff of the site. You can't really ban anonymous comments, especially since they are not members of the site, and no one gets banned because of one person not liking a fanfiction. Considering she just commented on her fanfiction she has been unbanned, so whatever was wrong has been corrected.

    I am sorry if this was an inappropriate place for this but is there a place to post comments to the site rather than to an individual author? I responded to the information I was given regarding the banning of elvirakitties. If this was not accurate I apologize. If she was banned for abuse, could you please explain in what matter she was abusive as I'm not certain of the criteria? I also would like to express my displeasure over a response I received which referred to me as a noob which I do not know the meaning of but suppose it to be as disrespectful as the vulgar language used in that person's other comments. I have no difficulty with disagreement; I just do not care to have people swear at me and call me names. That could be considered abuse, yes?

  No action is taken simply because a report is sent in, regardless of whether it's one or many reports. Works are not removed for including offensive or controversial content. The committee will not take action unless the user violates some portion of the Terms of Service, such as plagiarism, harassment, or spamming.

  Thank you for the entertaining comments. I’m always fond of watching people make a fool of themselves in public. I’m not an Ao3 official. You made a public comment containing inaccurate information in a condescending, arrogant, threatening, disrespectful tone of voice. That’s not how people like to be addressed nor how someone should be treated. It is a terrible and toxic approach to any issue. Of course people are going to call you out on our actions.
  As someone who has a lot of customer service jobs, I promise you that your reaction is the best way to not get positive results. I suggest you think before you act, hm? Read the websites ToS, use the appropriate channels of making a complaint, and don’t be awful while you’re doing so.
  I trust the staff and volunteers at Ao3 to make fair and just judgments. I’ve read the ToS several times over, it’s a fantastic setup. They do an important job for the content creator community. A lot of them are volunteers, they’re not even paid to tolerate toxic spittle. While I find your ineffective, incessant, imbecilic babbling highly amusing, I don’t find your terrible treatment of Ao3 staff and volunteers acceptable. They deserve to be treated better and I’m letting you know it.

        The issue isn't that they don't know how to use filters or just "don't like, don't read". The issue, for them, is that the content exists *at all*. It's a moral purity crusade against anything they deem "problematic". The most hypocritical part of it is that they'll see no wrong in sending death or rape threats or telling people to kill themselves as long as the target is somebody who likes whatever they've deemed worthy of crusading against.
        They also like to chuck "pedophilia" as an accusation at any kind of ship they don't like that involves any degree of age gap, regardless of if it's actually pedophilia. It's their catch-all "gotcha!" card they use because they assume nobody can fight back against that kind of accusation.

        This website has an "underaged" tag thats often used for explicit works, that's pretty pedophillic. I might be a user of this site but it does have problems.
        I've never seen these people send rape threats or death threats, but if they do then they're hypocrites and go against everything they want to stop. And if that is true, Anti-Antis are just as bad as Antis with death threats, believe me lmao

        As others have said, this is one of the reasons the AO3 was created and 'we own the servers' was a rallying cry, was that no one could go on some kind of crusade against fanworks and get them pulled down (as actually happened on LJ more than once, and not just there; Dreamwidth had a lot of trouble getting credit card payments set up for similar reasons).
        One person's 'weird and creepy' is another person's 'teenagers doing normal teenage things' and yet another person's 'thoughtful exploration of difficult issues and trauma.' I'm really glad the AO3 doesn't set itself up as any kind of moral arbiter of what those things are. That's what the required labels/CNTW are for, so I can make that call myself.

  Well, I mean, how would they know for sure? The point is that "consultants" weren't sent by Ao3, so they can't possibly know the full extent of who was contacted, for what. They wouldn't even know if you'd been contacted by such a scammer unless you reported it.

    Well, I assumed that Ao3 got to know about it from the people, who informed them about this issue.
    Anyway, due to the fact that the OP of the post linked below is from the Star Wars fandom, so I guess that both cases are connected with each other and it has to do something with this fandom specifically.

      They won't say who got sent the emails by those "consultants". It's a pretty standard thing on websites as, while we need to know about the problem, we don't necessarily need to know who was hit with it. Now, those who got sent said emails can volunteer the information themselves, nothing's stopping them. But the staff isn't going to do so.

  Anyway, the OTW has an amazing legal team, and since the accusations of pedophilia have no grounds, I wouldn't worry so much about it.

I have had some minor contacts anonymously, and I either block them or delete them. I was contacted by someone at FFN recently, and I thought it was another reader or writer. I don't know if it is or think it is related to what's happened here. I just either delete or block anonymous comments; I certainly do like to get feedback, and have no problem with criticism as long as it is polite and respectful. I just obvious troll posts or harassment, and luckily haven't had to deal with it much. I have had (minor) problems with trolling in the past on other sites - and here, I feel there is protection. As I said, I don't know if my experience was related to this or not.

  oops, just to be clear - in my first sentence I'm using minor as in not major, as in not a big problem. Although the person who contacted me said they would 'speak to' the other person about the subject he or she contacted me about (a duplicate title of a story), I kinda did wonder if it might be someone in authority - although the comment was a "guest" comment.

  The Terms of Service only apply to what users do on AO3 itself! There is no DM function on AO3, so it had to have been an outside website where the contact happened. Unfortunately, AO3 can't really control what people do or say on other websites :|

  Their efforts shouldn't do anything at least, as abuse is allowed to be shown even on major visual media, incest is not illegal even in a number on US states (where AO3 is based on), and even written fictional explicit underage works might be legal, in comparison to a visual depiction for instance. As the site doesn't allow private messages and every content is hidden until you click on the work's title, harm to minors is definitely something that cannot be argued against it. If anything they're just trying to waste FBI's time that could be spent on actual important things. I wonder how many straws those folks have to grasp at just to pull themselves out of bed in the morning.

I'm one of those willingly anonymous people who never give away information about memberships on other sites or social media channels, so e. g. I never use the same username twice etc., which means even if I had a tumbr account I wouldn't announce it on AO3. So thinking that the team of AO3 would have to rely on a different site (except for e-mail obviously) to contact me is a bit strange. Use your brain, guys.

Eh, not surprising. It's the same basic "pretending to be a rep from X organization with panic-inducing threats of account termination or legal action unless Y measures are taken" scam.
I'm actually more surprised it's taken this long for antis to adopt the "scam to steal your credit card and social security number" approach to their Purity Cult Moral Crusade cause.

Do 'such people' complain about material in the media ('real life stories' in popular weekly journals, TV series, films etc) which contain all sorts of nastiness (however it is defined)?
Most people come to fanfic websites to enjoy what is there (within the categories selected) - and accept that there will be some that are not to their taste/they would have classified differently.
The problem is as with certain spam phonecalls (supposedly from banks, 'a well known maker of computers' etc) there will be a gap between the start of the problem and recipients becoming aware that these are hoaxes.
Perhaps there could be a mechanism for reporting such incidents?

  They do, but intrafan conflicts have always been louder, because users feel they can affect change in fandom easier than talking to corporate, or because fans are relatively powerless targets, or in the worst cases because purity culture is a rationalisation for bullying. Though the justification and platform du jour changes, the behaviour is nothing new.
  The attitude you describe is definitely reasonable, but not everyone has had the same experience online as we did. I've learned to let things I dislike be and moving on, but that's the result of the platforms I grew up using and also real life experiences, both hardly universal. Also, some of the things people are angry about inspire really strong reactions, so it isn't merely a disagreement on aesthetics for them, but a moral obligation to act a certain way.
  Unfortunately, writing certain stuff means creating controversy, and controversy means being targetted for harassment. Often the most vulnerable authors are targetted first. Every few months, I find yet another work/author/archive I liked that's dropped off the face of the Earth because of nastiness. Sometimes it scares me too, like I'm waiting for my turn, but it's also inspiration to persevere and continue creating transgressive works in honour of the sacrifices made along the way.

    There are many reasons for fanfics and archives disappearing - including 'vanishing hosts' and people moving on to other things, at least some of the time because they have gone as far as 'the mind's storywriter' wishes to go in that fandom/activity in that community drops below the minimum needed to sustain it.
    Those who fall into the 'most people' category I describe above (or who decide to move to a 'more gentle' writing/collaborative community or fandom) rarely communicate because they are reasonably happy with the situation as is and accept that the boundaries between various categories are slightly fuzzy (and 'curiosity about other categories may result in discomfort'). Some will learn how to write better/appreciate different styles of writing and character interpretations (or why they displease you-the-particular-reader), and that some writings are exploring issues that are of particular significance to them (and which some other persons may find interesting). We have probably all come across writings which we think the author should have revised much more (and removed most of their pet cliches etc).
    While there will always be a number of people who insist only their interpretation is right, the harassers and the 'look-at-mes' (among other categories) will always exist - but they can to some extent be marginalised and, to some extent, others within the community #can# be supportive of those affected.

      'particular significance to them' should be 'to the authors': and probably most people have encountered the various points I mention.
      There will always be 'vampires'/'moral and other purists' etc - and there will be occasional 'storms over particular postings and interpretations of the rules' (this happens occasionally with entries on Wikipedia's Main Page - sometimes on topics which seem innocuous for most readers).
      If 'certain people on Tumblr' have nothing better to do than complain about certain activity on AO3 (or elsewhere) and wish to hassle other people then in many cases the problem is with #them#. (There will always be the odd exception.)
      Most of us know there is material on AO3 we do not care to read (on a variety of grounds) and that even material falling within our particular categories may be not to our taste - we just ignore it/do not investigate further etc.

    Honestly- and I direct this not just at you, but at anyone else who might be having similar fears- I find the best way to cut down on some of that fear is to go commando. My advice:
    1. Shut off anon option and Private Messaging (Tumblr). I find that these people are soooo much less comfortable carrying Tumblr harassment over to AO3 when they don't have the option to be anonymous, because unlike that blue-tinted hellscape, the admins here actually do something when someone's being harassed. Force these people to use their handles (if they're dumb enough to actually do it) and I promise you that even if they don't stop, they won't have an account for much longer. I personally don't like removing the anon option and screwing nice people who don't have accounts, but unfortunately this is how I have to protect myself, and it certainly removes a potential headache.
    2. Secure your sensitive information. Make sure that you have no truly identifying information about you on the internet. Do not casually link between your Facebook and your Tumblr if you have your real name, location, phone number, or (God help you) your EMPLOYER or SCHOOL listed there. If you post controversial things on one Tumblr and non-controversial things on another, don't do anything to associate them; same for AO3. And as the mods have said, NEVER give out your password to anyone, real life or internet.
    3. *Spongebob voice* "BACK IT UP!" Backing up your stories is a good idea, whether it's to Livejournal, Dreamwidth, or another platform of your choosing, so that way you don't lose them if some idiot gets into your account and deletes things. I recommend backing stuff up to Livejournal, and THEN using DreamWidth's import option to carry your LJ stuff to DW. Doubly-backed up is good.
    4. DO NOT ENGAGE. I know it's tempting to defend yourself when being harassed, being accused of being an x-apologist because you dared to write a "bad ship" (Lord I hate that term), but remember: you do not owe an explanation or a defense to some random jerk on the internet about why you like what you like. It's better to just not engage at all; don't argue, don't feed the fire, just report, ignore, or delete the comment (never do the last until you've reported it, if it's reportable). It's like dealing with trolls: They get tired and walk away a lot faster when you stop feeding them. These people are not coming after you because they want to have a discussion; they have already made up their minds; they aren't going to stop until you submit to them. Trying to change their minds is pointless and will only end in tears for you.
    That's the best advice I can give. AO3 is a good website because it actually cares about its user-base and is willing to protect it from people who would harass and attack over something as insignificant as a ship.

I don't know how many of these comments are in response to my comments but I would like to apologize to anyone I offended. First and most importantly, I am very much against censorship and do not want stories banned due to content that is not covered under site rules. I am very much for "don't like, don't read" and let the rest of us enjoy it if this is what we want to read. I was mainly saying I didn't understand the criteria for what constitutes abuse. Also, I was having a bad day, the information that one of my favorite authors was banned again set me off to react without stopping to think first. I do like this site, I would be devastated if it went away. Please do not send me comments that use vulgar language, belittle me, or call me names.

I think everyone's entitled to have a bad day once in awhile. :)
But I agree, people should be free to write however they like, and if it isn't somebody's cup of tea - just don't read. Also, a character being written about doesn't always reflect the views of the writer - it's the character in their story.
That's how I see it anyway.
