(Humanized Cars) Whumptober 2024
Doc has an accident, wakes up with amnesia, and forgets the last year, the year after the tiebreaker race, which means he forgets Lightning. Doc doesn't know that everyone knows his secret and he’s the same grumpy man who never wants to have anything to do with racers or racing again. Lightning's heart breaks in pieces because his mentor not only doesn't recognize him but can't stand him like on the first day. Can Lightning make Doc remember again or will he have to start from scratch?

Monty silenced it quickly, thumb hovering over the decline button. “Ignore it,” he muttered. “He’s just checking in.”
Doc said nothing, but he filed it away. Harv had a way of “checking in” that always left the kid looking like he’d just run ten laps and lost them all.

Doc gives Lightning time, but he just wishes his kid would slow down and admit he’s sick. Instead, they go through the motions until Doc has enough.

Steve’s drooling into the pillow a little by the time Eddie’s thumb presses to his hole. He twitches, brows furrowing a little, and it’s nice but he really doesn’t have the energy for this. “Eddie, I’m not sure I can do this tonight.”
A soft noise escapes Eddie. He leans down, kisses Steve’s lower back. “No, sweetheart, I know. I wanted to try something else, if you’ll let me. I promise you can just lie there and I’ll take care of you.”
Steve considers that for a moment, then nods, eyes fluttering closed.
He feels his cheeks being spread apart further.
And then, something warm and wet against his hole.

Eddie’s eyes flicker from their connected hands to Steve’s face, still looking down, and back again before Steve responds.
“Coming here to hang out with you and eat pie filling is all that got me through the day. Being here helps. You help.”
When Eddie was younger, Wayne used to call him a great little helper when he’d fix something around their trailer, or hold the flashlight just right beneath the hood of a car Wayne was fixing for a neighbor. He’d done something concrete, done a task, and felt helpful. But sitting here in the diner with Steve’s fingers wrapped around his own, nothing he’s done is a tangible help. All he’s done is exist in the same space with Steve and Eddie’s never felt like his presence is soothing. Always too much, too big, too loud.
He doesn’t know what to do with Steve wanting to be with him, or with their hands clasped together, so he just stays the course.
“Well, shit. Good. That’s, yeah. That’s good to know. Ready to test some cherries?”
Or, Eddie's an amateur baker who desperately needs a healthy dose of hope. He finds it in the bottom of a pie dish and the hands of Steve Harrington.

The caveat was that if the monster caught Steve first, he’d do as he liked, ominously warning Steve, “When I catch you, you’ll be mine. I’ll make you bleed and scream and cry just like the pretty thing you are.”
