“Maddie, when was the last time you talked to them before setting up this dinner?” Buck asked, not taking the beer, making her set it down on the small table.
“Maybe a few weeks ago?” She frowned.
“And do you know when the last time I talked to them was?”
“No.” Her frown deepened. “How did that never come up?”
“Because most of our conversations, after you got here in person, were about people I worked with, or how you were settling into your new life.” Buck pointed out. “And before you got here, how long had it been since you and I talked?”
“Three years.” She whispered.
“The 118 became my family.” Buck said certainly. “When I didn’t have mom and dad, and I didn’t have you, I had the 118."
OR
Buck refuses dinner at Maddie and Chim's place. Maddie moves it to Buck's place without asking beforehand. It goes as badly as Buck expected. But he has Eddie and Christopher Diaz to help him through the aftermath.

Summary
After finishing at the Fire Academy, Buck’s stopped on his way out by Captain Bobby Nash from the 118 — the most talked-about station in LA. Nash offers him a spot as their new probie, impressed by his background as a dispatcher and his record-breaking run through training.
But Buck turns him down. He knows what went down under the last captain, Gerard, and he’s not about to walk into a place still recovering from that kind of mess. He tells Nash the team needs time, trust, and probably therapy before anyone new shows up. When Nash flinches at the word “therapy,” Buck figures he made the right call.

Summary
Buck’s recovery was supposed to be about healing.
Instead, it gives him too much time to think and a challenge from May that leads to one very awkward cooking video.
He expects ten views.
What starts as a way to fill the endless hours of recovery becomes something Buck never expected: a community of strangers who want to hear him talk about food, dinosaurs, and whatever questionable amount of garlic he considers "reasonable."
Between viral cooking videos, a very invested teenager, a seven-year-old dinosaur expert, and the people who never stopped choosing him, Buck starts to realize that maybe he was never as alone as he thought.

And he went ahead with the brilliant idea of saddling him with his dead sensei’s son, Itachi’s little brother, and a kunoichi who was so much a cannon fodder that she had a literal target on her bright red dress.

Summary
Eddie turns his gaze over to Buck, he doesn’t look upset. It’s more of an unsure type of look. Eddie doesn’t ever want to make Buck feel that way, it hurts his chest just seeing it there.
So he swallows and speaks, “You were upset.” He states and Buck tilts his head at him, and pulls his bottom lip into his mouth.
“You came all of the way back to LA, with Chris and all your stuff because I was sad?” Buck questions and oh, that’s definitely what he did. That’s actually exactly what he did.
“Yeah.” Eddie exhales and Bucks breathing hitches but he keeps talking, “I— I also kind of want to punch Tommy in the mouth.”

Or Buck accidentally calls Eddie while he’s at the bar with Tommy and Buck doesn’t take the man home, and their conversation happens in the bar, instead of the morning after.

It’s a fucking miracle that Buck finds Chris after he falls off the truck and he nearly sobs with relief when the water finally recedes enough that he can plant his feet on solid ground. Buck holds Christopher tight with one arm, his free hand still clutched around the pole he’d held onto as the water had rushed around them, unable to let go just yet.

Fuck, he’s miserable.
Out of all of the side effects of deciding to stop sleeping with random people – mostly random alphas, and especially for his heats – being absolutely miserable isn't on his list.
Or Buck and Eddie meet on a site where alphas and omegas swap clothes to help with their cycles, it just escalates from there in typical Buddie style.
