    This is how it happens:

    There is light: so much light you can almost taste it. Chop it up. Swallow it, even as it chars your throat to ash. The world resolves itself into two things: the light, and the thing it refuses to touch. The things she refuses to allow it to touch. The things she is holding on to by the atoms at the tips of her fingernails, even as those fingernails begin to unravel like chaff in the breeze.

    The first thing she thinks is: it’s a shame she never got to tell Erin the name she picked out.

    Somehow, in some strange twist of chance or even just a moment of forgetfulness, Ash ends up calling someone else other than his Mother or the Professor, who would have thought that an accidental call to someone would have helped him out somehow?

    Steven wasn’t entirely sure what to think about being accidentally called by a child who had just started their journey, let alone the craziness that came with it, but– somehow, for whatever reason, he felt as though it would be wrong of him to just leave the poor kid alone. Besides, it wouldn’t hurt to at least help the kid whenever it’s needed, or even travel with them!

    Of course, discovering more stones and minerals would be a great benefit.

    People change. Especially after traumatic experiences, and especially after growing older. And while the war is over, and he knows he should relax, everything around Ash is slipping anyway. It doesn't matter if he smiles, if the world around him doesn't smile back. He's on the Orange Islands now, and yet the people he held closest are dying flames.

    And the wind is growing, distantly. Ash can't tell if it'll be the wind or themselves to break his friends the most, but for now, he seriously needs to hold onto that slowly flickering hope.
