Summary
Ponyboy was staring at the wall for god knows how long. This has become a habit as of late, and he doesn’t know how to cut it out.
“Quit doin’ that,” Soda had said yesterday night, when he came home from a late shift and Ponyboy was simply staring into a void, eyes wide and red with tear tracks across his cheeks. “It freaks me out, Pony. It ain’t you.”
And he was right. It wasn’t him. Pony didn’t stare numbly at things. He looked. He observed. He thought.
He didn’t really think anymore. Not about anything important, at least. Only Johnny and Dally.
Or: Ponyboy’s grieving and Soda’s worried.

Summary
"You ain't livin' here no more, Steven. You wanna hear it louder or are yer ears workin' fine?"
Immediately, Steve tried to argue. "The hell?! You can't do that!" His voice cracked, weak and alarmed, because What The Fuck? He grew up here. This was his house too.
That was a stupid thing to assume, apparently, because his father just cocked an eyebrow at him like he was an idiot. Like Steve was the most disgusting thing he'd ever seen on the planet. "Ain't you eighteen?"
"Yeah?"
"Since when?"
"Since a month ago!"
"Then that's that," his father said simply, shrugging, "You old enough to figure yer shit out 'n find somewhere else to crash. So get off my lawn before I call the cops."
Steve didn't really know how to react to that, so he just stood there and stared, dumbstruck.
Or: Steve gets kicked out for good, and he refuses to tell a single soul. It takes seven months for the gang to find out.

Summary
Darry didn’t register the way Pony tensed until he was already reaching for his left sleeve. He pulled at it without a thought—then Pony’s hand came up abruptly and stopped him.
It caught him off guard. A simple, “What are you doing?” left his mouth as he pulled the sleeve the rest of the way up.
And the moment he did, he froze. His brain didn’t process what he saw for a moment.
Oh.
Pony’s wrist was completely covered in burn marks.
But not the same marks from the fire in Windrixville—not wild and uncontrolled like some of the scars he had from the burning church.
These were clearly from cigarettes. His cigarettes.
Oh.
Or: Ponyboy’s been hurting himself, and Darry finds out. A confrontation ensues.

Summary
Soda opened the door.
"Hi."
Oh.
As suspected, there was Johnny Cade standing on their front porch. The strange part? He was drenched in rain, shivering a storm, and covered head to toe in blood. Johnny looked like a beaten mutt, with the way his suspicious black eyes were wide and hollow, a wild contrast from the crimson across his face. A long, ugly, jagged gash sliced through his left temple, blood flowing freely from the wound like a river between them, matching with the scarlet that poured from his bottom lip. His hands were completely busted, knuckles split open, like he'd fought tooth and nail with something or someone. All the color drained from Soda's face. Something dark and stormy bled over his features. "Jonathan Andrew Cade," he said. "What the hell?"
Or: Johnny shows up to the Curtis household with a cracked head and a concussion. Soda, being the oldest home, takes it upon himself to patch him up.

Summary
Dally inhaled sharply and slammed his hands down on the table. It spooked Johnny so bad that he flinched hard. "I've about had it with your folks, Johnny! They're awful to you! Why do you even—why do you still live over there? Why d'you bother, when this happens?"
Johnny stared. He didn't have an answer for him. He truly didn't know why, but he didn't have it in him to leave. "I got nowhere else to go."
"Now that just ain't true—" Dally huffed, "The Curtis kids would take you in like a stray pup in a lick of a second. Two-Bit's Ma would be happy to have ya. Hell, you could live with Steve. His dad sure ain't great, but at least he doesn't beat him stupid."
"I don't wanna be a problem," Johnny admitted.
"Kid, your old man is markin' you up so bad that you don't got a sliver of skin that ain't bruised. Nobody would think twice about letting you stay with 'em. As long as it keeps you away from this—" To get his point across, Dally reached over and pinched him by the cheek. "You don't deserve this, Johnny."
And Johnny just stared at him.
Or: Johnny misses the bus, gets a beating, and ends up ditching school to hang out with Dallas. They have a talk.

"Ah, so we've reached critical mass, then, have we?"
That was the first thing Donnie said when Leo walked into his lab at four in the morning, shaking apart and clutching a pillow to his chest like it's his last and only lifeline.
Or: Leo's sleep schedule just can't catch a break. One week he's taking naps every chance he gets. The next, his insomnia is giving that sleep deprivation world record a run for its money. Luckily, Donnie is well-versed in the tales of an insomniac twin.

Summary
“Have you ever thought about dying?”
It was late, sometime between midnight and sunrise when the world slept quiet and peaceful beneath the gently blinking eyes of the stars. Hunter hummed from where he stood leaning back against the counter, just out of arms reach from Luz’s hunched-over form sitting at the table with her head resting on crossed arms. His eyes stayed firmly on the glass of water in his hand, and she watched him swirl it around, waiting for an answer without impatience or urgency because she knew she would get one, because he always answered her even if the answer was ‘I don’t know’, because this was the millionth conversation like this they’d had since getting stuck in the human realm and they’d both already asked and answered far worse questions than that.
OR Luz and Hunter have a midnight talk about death, grief, and questions that were better left unanswered.

Summary
With a squeak, the kid bolted from where he’d been hiding near the elevator and scrambled onto the couch next to Tony. He snuggled into the man’s side, pulling his throw blanket up after him.
“What’s up, kiddo? You’re supposed to be asleep.”
“Found you,” Peter replied, voice muffled in Tony’s shirt.
He pulled the boy off himself. “What do you mean?” he asked, smoothing Peter’s messy hair with his fingers.
“I finded you,” the kid repeated and then wedged himself contentedly under Tony’s arm.
----------
Or, Peter Parker comes into Tony Stark's life after traumatically losing his aunt. Tony swears the kid is only staying until he can find a suitable forever family for him, but, well... Things don't always turn out the way that we expect them to.
