“Buck,” Eddie says and he must sound some sort of way because Buck’s tone switches immediately.
“Is everything okay?”
Eddie wants to say no, that this is d-day level bad, but it’d be a lie. It’s not bad at all, just nerve wracking, just new. “Yeah, everything’s fine. My sisters are here.”
“Both of them? Adriana and Sophia?” Buck asks, voice matching Eddie’s level of shock. “In California?”
“In my house, right now,” Eddie responds. “Apparently Christopher invited them without telling me.”
“Oh, Eddie,” he whispers empathetically.
Or Eddie's sisters come to visit their nephews and help him discover a new perspective.

What would he even say?: “Hey, I know I have been working every day—possibly putting civilians at risk—but can you help me?”
He doesn’t think even Hen would know what to do with that. And even if she did, she’d surely have to report it to the captain.
And Chim would do anything for him, but it’s only been a few months since Buck last put Chimney in a tough spot. How could he walk up to his captain for the second time in 6 months and tell him that he’s compromised the team again?
No, he cannot do that to the already stressed-out, newly appointed captain with two young children at home. To the people who spent the past three months already worrying for him and going out of their way to check in and make sure he’s doing alright.
He was cleared by Hen—and she’s probably the smartest person Buck’s ever known—and this isn’t interfering with his work. He’s still saving people and fighting fires and caring for his son. Buck is fine.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Eddie asks. It sounds like an accusation.
“I, uh— I’m sorry,” Buck stammers, scratching the back of his head sheepishly, his eyes inconspicuously darting down to Eddie’s bloodied hands. “Eddie... What happened?”
Eddie’s brows twitch. The anger behind his eyes burns hot and heavy. “No, Buck. We’re not doing this. This is literally the worst time for—” He cuts himself off, aggressively pinching the bridge of his nose. “You don’t get to— to insert yourself like this. Not anymore.”
Buck’s heart sinks like a stone in his chest.
“You chose this, remember?” Eddie spits, the words dripping with bitter finality.
As soon as Eddie says that, Buck’s mouth clicks shut. Because he doesn’t remember choosing any of this. Not the icy silences, nor the irritated glances, nor this suffocating loneliness. All he wished for was to return to his family, not for them to abandon him.
OR: The tsunami is long over. Buck keeps drowning anyway.
