When Montreal Metros attempted to push out their captain, Shane Hollander, Ottawa leapt at the chance to have the two men playing on the same team. Scoffed at by many as a politically motivated gambit and sure to fail, the gamble-that-never-was paid off big time as the team has won three of the past seven cup games. Ottawa has consistently pushed back against the established narrative, refusing to be defined by metrics others claimed were the only path to success. Instead, they seemingly laugh at all established conventions and take pride in ripping up the rulebook and winning anyway. I wanted to understand how far this philosophy went, so I was invited by Coach Wiebe and the team to join them for a week of training camp to see how much of the Centaur’s unconventional approach is media PR and how much is genuine. This is what I learned after spending a week with them on and off the ice.

When Ilya Rozanov was twelve years old, his mom died. He hated his family and he hated being in Russia, so he decided he wanted to move to America. The best way he could think to do so was to become a professional hockey player, since he already played hockey, but that would take a LOT of work. He'd have to get super specific with his diet, since he was still a growing boy. He'd have to train with professional coaches for hours and hours every week, and he'd have to work on honing even the tiniest of skills.
Ilya didn't want to do any of that. He thought that maybe there was an easier way to get the outcomes he sought—a shortcut.
Ilya decides he doesn't want to put in the work and asks Claude to make him good at hockey. It ruins his life :(

Objectively, this used to be true. Nowadays Shane has many, many plans, between his nightly plans to look at Ilya’s penis through Skype and his various long-term plans laid out helpfully in his notebook, Canva (For Ilya’s sake. He is a visual learner), and more recently, Excel. Shane loves that excel sheet. He’s colour coded it.
In 2017, Shane Hollander spirals and proposes to his boyfriend of 4 days (or 7 years, or 9 years, or not his boyfriend at all, depending on how you look at it), which leads to a lot of plans, weird theories in the Montreal Voyageur locker room, some Twitter drama, and Ilya Rozanov entering his WAG era.
