Summary
Enjin's thought many times throughout his life about soulmates, and most of it was proven to be dead wrong the moment he met Zanka. Many people cling to idealized versions of soulmates, dreaming of an uncomplicated and fulfilling bond with somebody who makes the horrors of life in their toxic wasteland feel like a paradise. The truth, he found, is a lot messier than that.
There's no such thing as a love that doesn't hurt.
When Enjin follows his red string to the other end, he doesn't expect to discover that his soulmate is too young to see the threads. What is he supposed to do when his soul bond feels more like shackles?

Summary
"What… happened to the team? Where's everybody?" he croaked, fighting to keep his eyes open and locked on Enjin's face.
The man closed his eyes. Zanka had never seen him look like he didn't have control of a situation before, always so confident, but right now, his face creased with a somber expression. It wasn't right. An expression like that, twisted by grief and worry, didn't belong on a face like Enjin's.
"They didn't make it. It's just us, kid."
Things go sideways on a long-range mission deep into the polluted zone. As the only survivors, Enjin and Zanka have to find a way to get home, before their limited resources run out.
