“But he’s Buck,” Theo explains, pushing a small finger into Buck’s chest, as if to show Tommy exactly who Buck was. “Everyone calls him Buck.”
Tommy’s face relaxes slightly as he answers, “yes, that’s true, but—”
“Everyone!” Theo cuts Tommy off, holding up his hand as he begins to count on his fingers. “Me, Chris, Auntie Hen and Karen, Uncle Chimney, Ravi—”
Once he runs out of fingers on his one hand, he looks up at Buck, realization dawning on his face. “Aunt Maddie calls you Evan!” He exclaims, almost shouts in Buck’s face, eyes comically wide at this, apparently very important, piece of information.
Buck nods. “Yes, she does. Sometimes.”
“Aunt Maddie does, sometimes.” Theo reiterates to Tommy, his eyes narrowing as he cocks his head to the side, thinking. “Wait— Eddie does too! But only sometimes. Like less sometimes than Aunt Maddie. I think? But Eddie is Eddie, so it’s different.”
Tommy can’t help the snort he lets out, “you’re right about that, kid.”
Or, Buck runs into his ex at the grocery store, which forces Buck to confront feelings he's been ignoring for far too long.

Summary
Someone exclaims in the background, but Buck’s voice cuts through louder when he asks, “You… you want to borrow my…?”
“Flashlight,” Eddie supplies with patient emphasis. It is not, strictly speaking, a leap of faith to assume Buck of all people would have one, but he did move recently, so— who knows what’s still lost in Packed Box Limbo. “Please tell me you have one I can use.”
“I…” there’s a lengthy pause on the other end, Buck’s voice weak and tapering off at the end. “Y-Yeah, okay.”
Or: Eddie just needs to borrow some tools. Fleshlight, flashlight, what’s the difference? The distinction has never been more illuminating.

How do you say hello to your (former?) best friend of 7 years who fundamentally changed you after almost 5 years of silence? I definitely don't know. So I'll start with hi. And I'm sorry. I'm sorry I let the silence stretch out. I'm sorry I let the gap between us widen. I'm sorry I let time slip by. It was days before I realized I hadn't replied your texts or answered your calls. And I let it turn into weeks, months, years. I don't want the silence to have lasted longer than our friendship.
Or; 5 years after Eddie leaves LA again for El Paso, 5 years after he and Buck stop talking, Buck decides to send an email. (A story told through email correspondence)
