Pony looked at him then. Really looked at him. Darry’s jaw was tight, like it always was when he didn’t know exactly what he was doing. His hands were tightly folded between his knees, knuckles pale. But he meant well. His eyes were soft.
All the walls Pony had built up since the hospital – since the funeral, since the court hearing – they didn’t exactly collapse. But they cracked. Just a little.

It starts with a cigarette and a silence too heavy for one person to carry. Ponyboy’s grieving in pieces he didn't know he could. Darry’s trying to be something he was never taught to be. On a quiet porch, under stars that don’t shine like they used to, they talk — really talk — about what’s been lost, what’s still left, and what might come next.

"'Where are Dally and Johnny?' Darry asked. His voice was real serious now, all tiredness forgotten. 'Are they okay?' He strode to the kitchen and dug around in the icebox, grabbing an ice pack that he tossed to Two-Bit.
'They're alright,' Two-Bit said. 'But the cops showed up not long after the fight started and they got arrested. Both of 'em, even though Johnny didn't do nothin', other than try and pull off the guys who were beatin' Dally to a pulp—'
Ponyboy sucked in a breath. 'Johnny got arrested?'"
Or, Ponyboy doesn't go to the drive-in with Dally and Johnny that night. Without him, Dally gets into an altercation with the Socs, setting off a wave of violence and unforeseen consequences that neither Ponyboy nor the rest of Tulsa is prepared for.
