Oh shit, Frank must’ve just said something, because now he’s looking at Mel expectantly, and she’s realizing a second too late he’s waiting for her to answer.
“Uh, yup, mhm!” Mel nods quickly, her eyes shooting past Frank’s shoulder, fighting the blush she knows is there. He must be satisfied with her answer, because he continues, and good lord, Mel is fucking endeared by this man.
Her eyes drop to his lips again, moving fast as he talks excitedly. They look so soft and inviting. Mel wonders what kind of chapstick he uses. She feels like she’s losing her mind, just a little, because now she can’t stop thinking about what they’d feel like on hers.
She shouldn’t. She really shouldn’t. There are a hundred reasons why, but still…Mel can’t fight the pull to him anymore.

“Mel?” His voice came out high and tight. He couldn’t see any light peeking out from under the door, but he opened it anyway and flipped the switch. It was empty. Frank yanked the shower curtain open. Nothing. “Mel?”
He quickly backed out and crossed the room in two large, quick steps to turn on his bedside lamp. Frank blinked rapidly, his eyes adjusting to the light. Bile crawled up his throat as a quick scan confirmed his suspicions: Mel was nowhere to be found. Her glasses were missing from her nightstand, too.
She was probably fine. Everything was fine. Frank was just spooked. He was about to open their bedroom door and wander off in search of his girlfriend when a piercing screech shattered the quiet night air.

She’s fucking lonely.
Despite Dr. Mohan warming up to her over the last few months (why the fuck did she have to switch to nights?), and Dr. Santos inviting her out to karaoke after the 4th of July shift from hell, Mel does not think she’s made any real friends at the hospital.
Until Frank.
Their second shift together after months apart had splintered some of the armor Mel always put on, making her feel lighter. Like the weight of the world wasn’t constantly crushing her.
She’d been beyond delighted to walk into work on July 5th and see him at the hub, drinking a Redbull and cracking jokes with Dana. He’d tossed her a “good morning Mel!”, and it was like she’d lit up on the inside, for the first time in a long time, just like the fireworks they’d watched together the night before.

“Hey, baby,” Frank murmured as Mel launched herself into his arms, burying her face into the crook of his neck. He tightened his grip around her, heart swelling.
“Hi,” came Mel’s muffled response. Her hair was tied up in a hasty bun and she was in one of Frank’s sweaters. Her usual slouchy wear, but somehow, this time, the sight of it knocked the air out of Frank’s lungs.
A part of him was itching to pull out the box and ask her then and there, but Frank restrained himself. It had to be perfect. If he was going to do this marriage thing a second time, he was going to do it right.
Or, Frank is ready to propose to Mel. Only problem is, he's lost the ring. Mel has no idea about any of it.

“Sorry, what?” There must be something in Frank’s voice, because out of the corner of his eye, he sees Mel turn just slightly to look in his direction.

Hearing her voice didn't bring the relief he expected. It brought a devastating bout of guilt instead. Out of everyone in this godforsaken hospital, why did it have to be her?
Mel, who looked at him with those wide, earnest eyes as if he were someone to be respected. Mel, who didn't know the full extent of how hollow he really felt. He wanted to push her away. He wanted to yell at her, to tell her to get out, to save herself the embarrassment of being associated with someone who ruined his own life. He could feel the ugly irritability building up in his chest. The defensiveness he always put on when he felt too vulnerable.
Tell her to leave, his brain screamed. Snap at her. Make her hate you so she walks away and doesn't have to see you like this.
But when he opened his eyes and saw her sitting there in her scrubs on the dirty floor, her own hands knotted together, his fire inside died before it could catch a spark.

And right there, in his desperate plea, was the absolute, terrifying core of why she had to stop it.
He was too willing to erase his own needs, to compromise his own emotional limitations, and shrink himself down into whatever shape she needed just to keep her comfortable. He adored her completely. He cherished the very ground she walked on and treated her with a level of devotion that she felt unworthy of.
