Summary
As the second prince of the Zen'in Empire, Megumi never really expected greatness from his life. He wasn't directly in line for the throne like his older brother — he wasn't expendable army-fodder like his younger brothers. Megumi always expected to marry high, stick to his ancient texts and occupy some important aristocratic position in the refined Zen'in court, where most of the pleasant smiles hid petty grudges and the prim nobles all watched for the slightest hints of weakness.
What he didn't expect, though, was for his father, the Emperor Zen'in, to marry him to the warlike Itadori kingdom in a political alliance.
He wanted to hate the new kingdom. The rough soldiers, the desert life, the way everyone seemed to just speak their mind bluntly rather than taking the time to be polite. He wanted to hate his fiancé, Itadori Yuji, the way he grinned all the time and laughed in a playful cadence. Princes were meant to act refined, and Yuji was everything Megumi disliked.
But hatred is a pretty hard emotion to carry in the face of freedom.

“So how long have you been a doctor?”
“About 6 months.”
“That’s awfully short.” Yuji furrows his brow.
“I assure you that I’m just as qualified as any other doctor here.” Megumi rolls his eyes. He’s heard that phrase at least 10 times today, and he’s getting tired of people questioning him.

"Um," Itadori followed, finally forcing himself to break their steady gaze as he looked down at his jeans, patting the pockets. "I'm not sure that I have a lighter with me. I'm sorry," he said in an apologetic tone. He looked back up to catch Megumi’s gaze with what he could only describe as big puppy-dog eyes.
Before Megumi could even find it in him to muster out a "no worries, it's totally fine," Itadori slowly began walking toward him, closing the already small distance between the two. Megumi felt like his brain might short-circuit as he watched the taller boy come closer to him, unsure of what was happening.
Before he knew it, Itadori's face was mere inches away from his own. Megumi could feel the heat from his cigarette as he slowly brought it back up to his mouth, eye contact never faltering.
"But..." Itadori spoke in a quiet, lower tone, one only Megumi could hear as his lips practically grazed his ear, "I think I could still help you out."
Megumi could feel his pulse in his throat now. What was that supposed to mean? And why did he feel so eager to find out?
