Summary
"Oh," Theo stops, stunned. "I think that's Sherman's tree."
"The General Sherman Tree," Buck corrects. "Gotta put some respect on his name."
"What did the general even do?" Eddie wonders aloud.
"Not sure," Buck ribs, nudging Eddie playfully. "I wasn't talking about him. I meant you gotta put some respect on the tree's name."
"Right," Eddie's grin still sits plainly on his face. "My bad. Just didn't expect you to assume the tree's gender."
Buck sputters, the laugh that emerges from him almost incredulous. He gives Eddie a playful shove, and Eddie dodges out of the way gracefully, situating himself next to Theo. Theo, who is still staring up at the feat of nature, slack-jawed and wide-eyed.
"It's big!" Theo exclaims, slightly breathless.
"The biggest, if you recall," Chris adds helpfully.
"Can I grow that big?"
Or; The Buckley-Diaz family takes a trip to Sequoia National Park. Buck and Eddie find their way to each other in the meantime.

Summary
So, Eddie thinks he might hate Frank's office.
It's not that he has anything against the guy's design choices, per se. The gray couch, white knit cushion covers, and perfectly drab rug are certainly… fine. But as Eddie sits on the couch, sinking deeper in every second, eyes landing on the walnut desk tucked into the corner as he pointedly avoids chancing a glance at Frank, his skin crawls. He's 27, punching his problems so hard he nearly kills a man. He's 29, holes in his wall and bags under his eyes, wondering what the point of it all is. He's 32, his son lives three states away, and he's blown his life up again.
He's 34, and he knows Frank's office has been the backdrop that has punctuated the worst moments of Eddie's life. So he hates it.
Or; In the months after getting stabbed in a hospital chapel, Eddie's back in therapy. He's throwing up in churches. He's dissociating in elevators. He's being reckless on the job. And somewhere in that mess he maybe realizes he isn't quite as broken as he thought.
(aka, my post-s9 eddie whump thesis)

Summary
Coming out is a scary prospect. Especially when you're thirty four, chronically emotionally repressed, and in no uncertain terms deeply in love with your best friend (i.e. the intended recipient of said coming out). And it's with that in mind that Eddie gives himself a rare moment of grace, accepting that maybe it was the colossal weight of this emotional distress, and not his own personal failure that led him to develop his worst idea yet - a practice run.
Or; Eddie practices coming out with his new favorite four-year-old. It doesn't go well, or maybe it goes a little too well.

Summary
Adriana Diaz is 24, fresh out of college and armed with little more than a degree, no plan to use it, a recently-imploded social life, and a bank account hovering dangerously close to overdraft. She scrolls through an embarrassingly sparse message history to find a text from 2019, and mouths a quiet thanks to the cloud for saving it. She messily scribbles the address '4995 South Bedford Street' onto a post-it, recalling a house she last saw for her sister-in-law’s funeral. She guesses that she's no longer welcome in Houston, after her graduation ceremony and the cold shoulders that came with it. El Paso certainly has nothing to offer beyond disappointed sighs and disapproving glares from her parents. And so she gets in her tiny, wheezing silver Nissan and heads west toward Los Angeles.
Or; Adriana Diaz arrives at Eddie's door one summer afternoon and finds her brother co-parenting two children with his best friend. She flounders around in search of purpose, friends, and maybe some way to save her brother from his own obliviousness.

Summary
From: [email protected]
Subject: Hi
Hi Eddie,
That seems almost too informal to capture the complicated mess of emotions involved in starting this email. How do you say hello to your (former?) best friend of 7 years who fundamentally changed you after almost 5 years of silence? I definitely don't know. So I'll start with hi. And I'm sorry. I'm sorry I let the silence stretch out. I'm sorry I let the gap between us widen. I'm sorry I let time slip by. It was days before I realized I hadn't replied your texts or answered your calls. And I let it turn into weeks, months, years. I don't want the silence to have lasted longer than our friendship.
Or; 5 years after Eddie leaves LA again for El Paso, 5 years after he and Buck stop talking, Buck decides to send an email. (A story told through email correspondence)

Summary
“This isn’t my life!” Buck exclaims. “This is not how it’s supposed to be. Abby is supposed to be gone. She’s supposed to have left. As in, left Los Angeles, not left me to marry Bobby. Bobby’s supposed to marry Athena.”
“Cap and Athena? But she’s—”
“Married. Yeah,” Buck huffs. “Like I said, that doesn’t work out.”
“Because Real Michael is gay?” Eddie asks skeptically.
“Real Michael is gay,” Buck confirms.
OR: After his break up with Tommy, Buck falls asleep on Eddie’s couch and wakes up in a world where Bobby is married to Abby, Hen and Karen are divorced, Athena and Michael are faking a happy marriage, Chim has a daughter that is not Buck's niece, and—just to really, personally fuck with him—Eddie and Maddie are engaged to be married.

Summary
Eddie is working hard on figuring himself out, getting a life, and also reestablishing contact with Buck after worrying about them drifting apart and their friendship changing. Realizing that sometimes people misunderstand his relationship with Buck should not be the shock it is. Also, if Chris could stop launching verbal sneak attacks on him, he'd appreciate it.
Meanwhile, Buck's learning to parent a toddler while not at all being insecure about something said by one Margaret Buckley. He's just studiously avoiding the word 'Parent' like the plague, and otherwise doing his damn best.
or
If Buck had a nickel for every time someone left him their kid in their will without his knowledge—well, he’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice now.

oH MY GOD this fic is incredible. Characters go through such realistic struggles and it's communicated and written so well, and emotional beats are so earned and so natural. It's an incredible slow burn, and the pacing never feels off. Everything builds to such a perfect climax, it's truly masterful how the author creates such conflicts and lets the characters work through them. I can't recommend this enough, it broke my heart and pieced it back together with some of the most tender scenes I've had the pleasure of reading. (Including one of my favorite getting together conversations of all time)

Summary
He feels weightless for a second when his truck flips over, and for some inexplicable reason, he thinks back to when he was a kid. Whenever someone asked him what superpower he wanted if he could have any one, he always said flying. Flying didn’t end up being that fun, though. Not in a shot down helicopter, and certainly not in an overturning vehicle. He meant flying, like, in the sky and maybe with a cool pair of wings, but he never really gets what he wants. He gets what he wants but a little off-kilter, maybe 50% of what he was hoping for with some significant changes.
It’s getting a little funny.
Eddie tries to go to Texas. What do you get when you cross a man and an eighteen-wheeler truck?

WOW this fic has some of the most vivid imagery I've ever read. It paints such a heartbreaking picture so elegantly it was tearing my heart into shreds. Love a good Eddie character study and this is truly one of the best ones I've read!!

Summary
Buck runs, and Eddie follows.
-----
It’s been over two months of chasing Buck across the country, from state to state to state, following a trail he suspects Buck doesn’t realize he’s dropping breadcrumbs on. If he did, Eddie worries he’d stop sending the postcards, and they’re his only clues. Buck left his phone in his apartment back in Los Angeles. If he’s gotten a new one, he hasn’t shared the number with anyone—not Maddie, not Chris, and certainly not Eddie.
So Eddie lays in a too-soft bed in a too-small cabin in the middle of bumfuck Nebraska, the first grey light of dawn creeping its fingers past the dusky pink curtains, and reads the postcard again. He knows what it says by heart, but it makes him feel a little less alone to hear Buck’s voice in his head.

Summary
“But why me?” Eddie asks.
“Everyone needs a nudge in the right direction now and then,” says Francis. “You… you need a firmer hand right now.”Eddie is dreading spending Easter in El Paso with his family, but after the events of last summer, he feels he has no choice. When he’s able to convince Buck to come along last minute he’s thrilled, but Eddie soon discovers he’s in for far more than he expected, including some divine intervention.
Or (spoilers): Eddie Diaz is such a hot mess express that literal Catholic saints have to start appearing to him to kick his ass in gear.
Set during spring 2025, almost one year after Chris spends the summer with his grandparents.

this fic!!! Everything about this is just handled with so much care, Eddie's whole journey is so heartbreaking and beautiful. I love a bit of magical realism, and the fact that it ties into real saints just feels even more poignant. It's so beautiful and so real, talks about the beauty of faith without shying away from the ugliness of how that same faith that can be so central to your identity can also cause so much pain. I cannot recommend this fic enough it's so gorgeous and nuanced and oozes emotion and love for these characters.
