Alastor had spent his whole life under the thumb of white society. When he had died, not much changed. While he looked powerful on the outside, his soul was in the firm and suffocating grasp of Rosie. But he would get out. He had to, before he lost his mind.
Vox was scared of everything. Of the world, of his reputation, of his own sins. But Alastor wasn't, and that inspired him. Still, he would never admit the true extent of his admiration, he couldn't risk being hurt again.

Anthony wants nothing more than to have his ‘homosexual’ tendencies and propensity for drugs to be taken away from him. One strung-out night, he reaches out and prays, using a book in Latin to ask God to rid him of these damned desires.
God does not answer.
A demon named Alastor hears out his plea instead. Said demon agrees to help him avoid sex with men and taking drugs, so long as Anthony keeps the book in his possession until he dies. Anthony, thinking it was all a hallucination, agrees. When he realizes what he’s done, he’s reluctant to work with the demon. But Alastor is obligated to try to help him anyway, and, over time, becomes someone Anthony can rely on as his work gets harder and more and more is asked of him by his mafia boss father.
And as the asks from Pa get more serious, Anthony’s increasingly unsure if his desire to go to Heaven when it’s all said and done will be fulfilled. At least if he does go to Hell, he’ll know one person down there.

As they watched, two more were wheeled in and added to the lineup—a blue blanket with a yellow hat and a sign that said SIMS, a pink blanket with a white hat and a sign that said KING. The other babies were sleeping, but these two were wide awake and staring.
And even though he knew they couldn’t see that far yet, Paul couldn’t help but notice that if they could, they’d be looking directly into one another.
