Summary
Three years. Then four. Mateo was cut in half, but he refuses to be just a miraculous survivor. Prosthetics, physical challenges, professional ambition, loyal friendships: everything becomes a weapon to serve only his own desires, never those of others. Of course, everything gets complicated when desires, unspoken longings, jealousies, fantasies, and fetishes intertwine, and the question eventually becomes unavoidable:
Can one reinvent total freedom and still remain in a relationship?
This short story can be read on its own, but it can also be read as a sequel to The 8th Night. Farewell to the Empire and half a dozen other stories.
