Summary
Grian was once known as Detective Xelqua, the Watcher’s Hero Agency’s most effective weapon against vigilantes. He uncovered nine vigilantes’ civilian identities in six years before disappearing, leaving the title behind along with the damage it caused.
When the Agency recruits him again to hunt down an unyielding new vigilante known as HotGuy, they offer him closure and a way to fix his past mistakes. Instead, Grian finds himself facing a case that mirrors the ones that destroyed him in the first place.
But if he finishes this job, he’ll finally be free.
Or, Grian is a former detective who uncovers the civilian identities of vigilantes, and Scar, better known as HotGuy, has been getting on the Hero Agency’s nerves.

“I’m the only person I’ve ever known to not have a bond,” Grian confirmed, and Scar only seemed amazed by this, gaping with a small smile tugging at his lips. His countenance was a lot different to how it had been prior, something easier, as if a huge weight had been lifted off of his shoulders. “Now, that makes two of us.”
“Do you ever wish you had one?” Scar asked, and Grian couldn’t help but think it an odd question from Mr. I've always hated the idea that fate decides who I love. But it was a question he had an answer to.
“I don’t think I ever got the chance to wish for one, I accepted my own fate before I got to wonder what another would be like.”

Or, Grian is the only person who can see soul strings, and Scar comes to him to get his own removed (spoiler alert: it's a lot more complicated than he thought)

Summary
“Let’s see! This one says… Letters.”
Grian blinked. “Ah. That sounds familiar. What kind of letters?” Jimmy shrugs, and opens the box. A cloud of dust scatters everywhere as he does so, and they both cough. He peers over the edge.
So many resealed envelopes were scattered in it, as well as letterpaper with scratchy handwriting scribbled. They all had a yellowish tint, and looked rather ancient. If Grian didn’t know any better about paper decay, he would’ve claimed they couldn’t be his. Some historical documents from family history, perhaps. But he recognised the stamps in the corner, and his own address, and the terrible writing.
“Oh, my goodness.” He whispered.
. . .Grian and Jimmy are tidying up Grian's house when he stumbles upon a box full of letters to his old pen pal, Scar. Filled with nostalgia and determination, he embarks on a quest through space to try and find him again.

If Jimmy couldn’t say why he didn’t leave the second he saw Joel and Grian, an even bigger mystery was why on earth he did what he did next. Maybe it was that he knew they’d stop yelling if he fixed the problem. Maybe it was the general fear of having their anger turned onto him eventually. Maybe Jimmy really was just too nice for his own good.
Maybe it was the fact that, deep down, Jimmy thought they were cool.
Maybe he wanted an in.
Or
Jimmy befriends bad boys Joel and Grian and slowly finds himself over the course of knowing them (if he ever really knew them at all).
