Independence, Missouri
1851Everyone has something to run from.
Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry Curtis from their life of poverty, a rough city, and memories of their late parents.
Keith “Two-Bit” Mathews, from a life spent too long at the bottom of a bottle and a house fire he was too out of sorts to do anything about.
Steve Randle, from his father, who has kicked him out for the final time.
Johnny Cade, from his abusive father and uncle, memories of his negligent late mother, and a half-world of his heritage between the Lakota and the white settlers of the trading post.
Dalton “Dally” Winston, from a murder that no one else will truly believe was in defense of Johnny Cade.
Free land in Oregon starts to sound more and more appealing. A new life. Atonement. Everything else they’re looking for.
It won’t be an easy journey, though. They might not all come out the other side. But this ragtag bunch, both old friends and new, is determined to get their last chance at a new start before it slips away from them for good.

Summary
Darry and Soda never expected to be practically coparenting an 18-month-old baby brother, Ponyboy, but so is their life in Tulsa, 1987, since their parents died in a car wreck eight months ago.
But their lives start to crumble when an accident causes Ponyboy to fall into the abandoned 8-inch water well in their backyard, becoming trapped and unreachable 19 feet down.
With their closest friends by their side, media swarming, and rescue personnel trying to work out how to reach their baby, will this scare of their lives draw the Curtises closer together or just become another funeral for them to plan?

1919
Darry’s finally home from his time in the Great War, but life doesn’t look like it used to for the Curtis brothers and their friends in the North End of Boston.
The Spanish Flu stole their loved ones and left Pony and Johnny with lingering ailments. Darry’s suffering from the aftereffects of a war that killed his friends and left him traumatized, hardly able to work under the stress. Soda’s torn between his brothers in what seems like a constant battle at home. Two-Bit, Steve, and Dally are doing what they can to try and keep their friends afloat after what’s clearly been the worst year of their lives.
Life’s not all bad with their lives on the harbor—they still have each other, after all.
But even that safety is threatened when the molasses tank looming over Boston bursts, flooding the city and taking lives with it.

Summary
Five years after Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston kick the bucket, the Curtis gang has recovered about as well as they're ever going to. Two-Bit's got a steady job, while Steve and Sodapop are expanding the DX's services to cover more car repairs and less working the gas pumps. Darry's got a new gig at an assembly line that brings in more money than roofing and the factory combined.
Above all else, Ponyboy Curtis has both a full-ride scholarship and an Order for Induction from the U.S. Military.
(or: how Ponyboy gets drafted, doesn't tell his brothers, and earns a punishment he never really deserved. He never believed life was all-too fair, anyway.)

Summary
Suddenly, Pony was sick all over the bed, coughing and gagging as the contents of his stomach emptied. Though he didn’t understand how there was even anything left to be emptied, considering he’d hardly eaten today.
Once Pony finished, he sagged back against his brother, who held onto him tightly. “S-Soda. Soda, I don’t feel good.”
Soda kissed the top of his brother’s head. “I know, baby, I know. It’s gonna be–” He stopped short, only now getting a good look at the sick on Pony’s bed. It was unlike anything Soda had ever seen. It was dark brown, and it almost looked like…coffee grounds? Soda knew for certain this wasn’t normal. Something was very, terribly wrong with his brother.
Or:
Ponyboy is worried about a test on Friday and Darry promises to help his little brother study. But it turns out he's more worried than anyone knew, worried enough to make himself severely sick. Darry's out with his friends when he finds out Pony is in the hospital, instead of at home - where they were supposed to be studying together.
