Running away from your problems is never the solution, but maybe this wasn’t running away. Maybe it was removing himself from the family that he hurt with his “death”. Who he couldn’t continue to burden, especially with something like this. Maybe this type of cancer wasn’t a death sentence, but it definitely would make them feel obligated to care about him again. And as much as he wanted to go home, he didn’t want the reason to be out of obligation and not love.

Shifting underneath stiff sheets I became more and more aware of how unfamiliar the world around me was. Where had I fallen asleep last night? The memory doesn’t immediately come.
I opened my eyes and was met with an unfamiliar ceiling; previous senses filling in the gaps to paint a concerning picture.
