Winning, or particularly what happened afterwards, was not nearly what it was cracked up to be.
Not that Joel had heard much about what winning was like before he’d won himself, the others apparently stubbornly refused to talk about it during the games. One of the many strange, made-up rules they followed. Still, he had expected it to feel better.
In the moments at the end, where adrenaline coursed through his veins and he was laughing madly, that was what winning should’ve been like. Triumphant. That’s how he felt. That was not how the winner’s lounge felt.
