Summary
The Taurans have had a small colony on Earth for several hundred years. With rumors that the Minotaur-like aliens have been kidnapping young men, and their impenetrable alien defense technology, they have had a touchy relationship with humans the whole time they’ve occupied Mount Beacon.
Stiles and Scott live in the foothills of Mount Beacon, in the impoverished town of Beacon Hills that depends on the infrequent trade with their Tauran colonizers. They work in a gay bar, trying their best to make ends meet, when one day Scott disappears. Stiles is sure that he’s been kidnapped and will go to the ends of the Earth to get his best friend back.
Derek Hale has been heir to the throne of the Tauran outpost on Earth his whole life. He doesn’t want to be king, so as long as he can avoid producing an heir, he won’t have to deal with royal nonsense. Until someone too tempting comes along and messes up all of his priorities.

“We knew from the start we couldn’t win,” Dick said quietly. “Diplomacy was always the fallback plan. And for that, I needed to communicate with you. I would’ve done whatever it took to bring peace to my planet.”

Dick laughed a small, short laugh. “My life is so small a cost, I don’t count it as one.”
“That is why you could be an asset to my ship. I see boundless potential in you. In time, you may even find a place here beyond that of Hostage Envoy. The opportunity is yours if you can prove your loyalty.”
Dick thought about his family back home, sorting through the rubble, mourning their dead. He thought about his own path forward, a million light-years from from Earth. He would have to rebuild his life from scratch here, in order to claw his way up the ladder. It would be an uphill battle, but Dick had never once shied away from battle. Every empire had its weaknesses. Rulers could be overthrown; Officers could be deposed; Captains could be enticed to change their minds. And maybe somewhere out there, there was a way for Hostage Envoys to go home.
Dick thought about Princess Koriand’r and wondered what other unlikely allies he might find on this ship. Five hundred elite soldiers from Earth were here with him, somewhere in the belly of this ship, waiting to be assimilated into the Hegemon’s armies. Maybe Dick really did have more power than he thought. Where there was a will, there was a way.
“Let me prove it, then,” said Dick, looking at Slade’s missing eye and wondering what sort of weakness he was hiding, to have lost it like that. “I can do whatever you ask of me. And I learn fast.”
“I know,” said Slade. “That’s why I took you instead.”
