    Summary

Penelope had let her husband go eleven years ago. Since then, every day, she waited for the news that she knew would come sooner or later. Since then, every day, she waited to hear those words: "I'm home."

"My queen?" one of the maids called. "They've spotted ships out at sea."

Penelope stood up suddenly and lifted her skirt with one hand. "Get everything ready and meet me on the beach. I'll be there. Waiting."

    ***

"No one else would understand," Polites had said.

"Why do you think I understand?"

Polites was a gentle soul. So Eurylochus knew he would lie. "'Cause we are friends, Eury."

Polites was gentle. And he didn't say what Eurylochus already knew. "You would understand. You would understand, because you could betray the one you love too."

    ***

Eurylochus returns home to find someone waiting for him. Penelope is also waiting, but there is no one for her.

Or: The plan is simple: kidnap Telemachus. The emotions behind it, however, are anything but simple.

    Summary

    Summary

Polites doesn't die in the cave of the cyclops. He probably should've died, but he survives and fights with all he has to stay alive, even when death feels like the kinder option. Eventually, the forgotten soldier embarks on a epic journey to get back to Ithaca, back to Odysseus, or die trying.
He's accompanied by the patron god of travelers himself, despite not technically being invited.
Polites and Hermes face many challenges together, and through their travels they find themselves doing something neither expected...falling in love.

    Summary

Telemachus finally broke the companionable silence, his voice soft but direct. “Uncle Polites… where is your family?”

Polites smiled—warm, easy. “Where? Little lion, it’s right here,” he said, sweeping his hand lazily in a wide arc. “They’re all around me. Your father. Your mother. Eurylochus. Ctimene. You.” His grin turned sly. “Especially you. The troublemaker-in-chief.”

Telemachus laughed, but only for a moment. The smile faded, replaced by a faint furrow between his brows. “No, I mean… your first family. Before us. The ones you came from. The ones who held you before you were big.”

Polites’s smile thinned, a loose thread pulled at the edge of an old tunic. He sat up a little straighter. “Oh,” he said quietly. “That family...”

Or, Polites reflects on his birth family and the moments that changed his life forever. He reminds Telemachus about a very important rule: family are the people you choose, not the blood you share.

I just needed to get home.

Yes, that was the mindset I needed.

Not that there is anyone there waiting for you, the cynical little voice said in the back of my head.

    Summary

Without saying anything, Polites wrapped an arm around his friend and buried his face in his shoulder. He could feel his eyes watering. "I'm tired of the war. I'm tired of the dying and the screaming. And I hate, I hate arguing with you."

"We're not arguing," Odysseus said at once, his voice softer than before. His hand was warm, stroking his back. "You're my best friend."

    "And you're mine," Polites whispered.

    Summary

You weren’t meant to be here. One moment, you were racing across the East Blue, wind tousling your hair, grinning at the sea. Then, without warning, the ocean opened up beneath you, and you fell.

You plunged through unfamiliar clouds, crashing onto the deck of a strange ship with a thunderous impact. As the world spun, you found yourself half-buried in shattered wood, realizing this was not your ocean.

And just like that, fate's tides began to shift.

    Summary

The day Lady Nereis came to Ithaca, the sea wore its gentlest face.

Polites watched more than he looked. He watched the way Nereis’s gaze slid to the palace guard and lingered—no, not to the guard. To him. He watched the tilt of her head, the dart of calculation, the faint intrigue when her eyes found the man in plain bronze with the laurel brooch at his shoulder.

She was a hunter too, then.

After, Polites moved through the first days of Nereis’s visit as he moved through everything: with care, with attention, with habit. He made sure he was never alone in a room with her without an open door and servants moving through. He set Eurylochus at the far end of any space where he stood guard. He made certain Nereis’s maid, a sharp-eyed woman called Erato, was always near.

And yet—no matter how he placed the pieces—the board kept changing.

Or, when a delegate from Zakinthos comes to Ithaca, Polites finds himself in the middle of a hunt. Except, he is the prey, and Lady Nereis will not take 'no' for an answer.

    Summary

Ody had thrown an object and Polites had clumsily caught it.
"What is this supposed to be?"

"Enlargers!" Ody had said, coming closer. He was smiling as if it were his birthday.

    "Enlargers?"

Seeing his confusion, Odysseus had picked up the object and placed it on his face. It was heavy on his nose, perhaps because of the glass. His friend's face was bright as it always was when he could use an idea of his own.
"Okay, try looking at that tree. What fruit do you see?"

    ***

He felt his grip on his weapon weaken as Polites reached out. He was armed too but did not seem to have any intention of drawing his sword.

"You" Neoptolemus tried to say but the word came out of his mouth like a prayer. "You..."

"Hey," Polites repeated. "I guess this madness is another one of Ody's plans, huh?"

    ***

Or: One day, Odysseus created glasses for Polites. Many years later, they are on opposite sides of a battlefield.

    Summary

Polites meets his soulmate in rocky Ithaca.

He is a boy a year his junior, with messy brown hair and lively grey eyes, and he is the prince of this island and the ones around it. He slinks through the quietest corners of the marketplace and taps Polites’ shoulder with a silver-ringed finger, breaking his focus on the merchant his uncle is talking to.

    Summary

Polites frowned and shifted his weight, glancing out at the sea. The water glittered, harmless as glass. And yet—

A restlessness. A whisper. Like the hush before a storm, when the wind tastes wrong. A prickle at the base of his skull, a flicker in his chest. Nothing he could name. Nothing he could fight. Just... wrongness.

Maybe it was the knowledge that Odysseus and Penelope would be leaving soon. Maybe it was knowing that for the first time in nearly a year, Ithaca would sleep without its king. Maybe it was nothing but nerves, the aftertaste of old wars that never quite leave a man.

Or, when Odysseus leaves for a conference on the mainland, the burden of Ithaca's safety lands squarely on Polites's shoulders. But with dark shadows circling nearby and a young prince to protect, can Polites handle the weight, or is Ithaca—and Telemachus—doomed to fall?

    Summary

Polites, Odysseus noted, had regained some of the weight he had lost in the past ten years. He wore a simple chiton and the ever-present bandana in his hair.
The years had damaged it but he still refused to cut his hair, as Eurylochus had done at one point, or replace the headband. "My mom made it," he said. "She'll make me another when we get home."

The Trojans have won the war. For some, it means the time to return home has come.

Odysseus, however, is not among them.

    Summary

It was the first time in ten years that Odysseus had lunch without Polites.

It was as if the entire Achaean camp had become deserted, populated only by ghostly whispers. The people seemed like shadows. The food was tasteless and the smell made him sick.

Odysseus knew that the people were talking to him and tried to answer. Plans, strategies, supplies. He was the king, of course he could take care of the new shipment of weapons.

    ***
It was the first time in ten years that Polites had lunch without Odysseus.

It was as if the white and pure tablecloth was dripping with blood. Every drop of water spilled, every plate moved, every knife that cut meat seemed to Polites like the sound of battle. But none of these people had ever fought alongside him.

Polites was happy that no one was talking to him. He felt the eyes on him and knew that everyone was wondering about him, the king's son who had returned home. They seemed confused, almost frightened of him. He was like a lost childhood object reappearing in the middle of the living room. Yes, Polites thought, it was a good thing no one had tried to talk to him.

    Summary

Polites held back a sarcastic retort. He didn’t want to come off mean. “I can’t sleep.”

Odysseus looked appalled. “What? Why not? You’re always able to sleep!”

He rested his chin on his knees, trying to seem smaller. He felt like how he was when he and Odysseus first met; shy, scared, apprehensive. “I’ve just been struggling with it lately.”

It was odd, he’d have to agree. He’d always slept perfectly fine ever since he was just born. This was the first time he’d ever gotten less than ten hours of sleep. He hated this feeling. This feeling of emptiness, of only running on the smallest bit of energy. He couldn’t even put in the effort to perk up like he always did when Odysseus was here.

“You know, if you have trouble, you could always come by and sleep with me.” Odysseus offered.

OR; Polites got that insomnia and Ody offers to let him sleep with him (literally, you creeps.)
